How to Rotate a PDF Page That Is Sideways or Upside Down

Scanned documents often come in sideways. Pages from different sources may have mixed orientations. Rotating PDF pages fixes these issues so the document reads correctly on screen and when printed.

When Rotation Is Necessary: Scanned pages that are rotated 90° or 270°. Mixed-orientation PDFs where some pages are landscape and others are portrait. Faxed documents that arrived sideways. PDFs created from mobile phone scans at odd angles.

What I Tested: I used the [Rotate PDF](/pdf-tools/rotate-pdf) on a 6-page document with mixed orientations.

• Page 1: Portrait, correct orientation. No rotation needed.

• Page 2: Rotated 90° clockwise (sideways). Applied 90° counter-clockwise rotation. Result: page displayed correctly in portrait orientation.

• Page 3: Upside down (180°). Applied 180° rotation. Result: page displayed correctly.

• Page 4: Rotated 270° (sideways the other way). Applied 90° clockwise rotation. Result: correct.

• All rotations preserved text quality, images, and formatting. No content was lost or distorted.

Step-by-Step: (1) Open the [Rotate PDF](/pdf-tools/rotate-pdf). (2) Upload your PDF file. (3) The tool displays all pages as thumbnails. (4) Click the rotate button on each page to rotate it 90° clockwise. (5) Or select a rotation angle (90°, 180°, 270°) for all pages at once. (6) Click 'Apply Rotation'. (7) Download the rotated PDF.

One Limitation: The tool rotates the visual display of pages — it does not change the page's physical dimensions. A landscape page rotated 90° will appear portrait on screen but may print incorrectly if your printer assumes a specific orientation. For printing, use your PDF viewer's print settings to adjust orientation.

Common Mistake: Rotating a page the wrong direction multiple times. If you rotate 90° clockwise twice, you get 180° (upside down). Click 'Reset' to start over, or use the undo button to reverse the last rotation.

Privacy: Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser. The file is never uploaded to any server.

Next Step: After rotating, if you need to extract specific pages, use the [Extract PDF Pages](/pdf-tools/extract-pdf-pages) tool to save individual pages as separate files.
