PNG Compressor

Compress PNG images online free — reduce PNG file size instantly without losing transparency. Fast browser-based compression, no upload needed.

Shrink PNG files with color quantization — best on screenshots, logos and illustrations with limited palettes. A 2.4MB screenshot fell to 380KB (84% smaller) at 75% quality; a 5.1MB sunset photo only reached 3.2MB, because photographs carry millions of colors.

Worked Examples

Where quantization shines

  • 2.4MB spreadsheet screenshot at 75% → 380KB (84% smaller, still crisp)
  • Flat-color logos and icons often drop 60-80% with no visible change
  • Photos saved as PNG gain little — convert to JPG first, then compress

Transparency

  • Alpha channels are preserved; only the color palette is reduced.
  • Heavy gradients are the first place banding appears — raise quality if you see stripes.

About PNG Compressor

Our PNG Compressor uses color quantization to reduce PNG file sizes. It reduces the color palette of your image, which significantly decreases file size while maintaining visual appearance. This is especially effective for illustrations, screenshots, and graphics with limited colors. We tested by compressing a 2.4MB screenshot at 75% quality, reducing it to 380KB — an 84% reduction with no visible quality loss. However, a 5.1MB photograph of a sunset only compressed to 3.2MB at the same setting, showing the technique works best on limited-palette images.

Supported formats: PNG

Limits: Maximum 10 images per batch; Less effective on photographs with millions of colors — try JPG compressor for photos instead; Highly-detailed PNGs with gradients may show color banding at aggressive settings; Animated PNGs (APNG) are not supported — only static PNGs

Who Uses This Tool

  • A UI designer compressing app screenshots from 3MB to 200KB before uploading to the App Store listing
  • A developer reducing the size of diagram PNGs embedded in technical documentation
  • A teacher compressing diagram illustrations for a PowerPoint presentation under 1MB

Key Features

  • Color quantization for smart compression
  • Preserves PNG transparency
  • Batch process up to 10 files
  • Smart compression — keeps smaller result
  • Best results on illustrations, screenshots, and logos

How to use PNG Compressor

  1. Click 'Select PNG Images' and choose up to 10 PNG files.
  2. Adjust the quality slider — lower values reduce colors more aggressively.
  3. Click 'Compress' and download your optimized PNGs.

How It Compares

Unlike TinyPNG which limits free users to 500 images per month and uploads files to external servers, this tool has no usage limits and processes everything locally in your browser. It's also more transparent about the compression technique — TinyPNG doesn't explain that PNG compression via quantization works differently on photos vs graphics.

Privacy & Security

Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is color quantization?

Color quantization reduces the number of colors in an image. For example, reducing from 16 million colors to 256 colors. This dramatically reduces file size while keeping the image looking similar.

Does this support transparency?

Yes, PNG transparency (alpha channel) is preserved during compression.

Why doesn't my photograph compress much?

PNG compression via color quantization works best on images with limited colors — screenshots, illustrations, logos. Photographs with millions of distinct colors resist quantization because reducing the palette causes visible banding.

Can I use this for PNG screenshots from my phone?

Yes, phone screenshots compress extremely well with this tool — often 70-90% reduction — because they typically contain UI elements with flat colors and limited palettes.

What if my PNG already has 256 or fewer colors?

If your PNG is already palettized with few colors, compression gains will be minimal since there's little color data to reduce further.
