How Do You Turn a URL into a QR Code?

Create a QR code from any URL free. Paste your website link and get a scannable QR code instantly — no signup, works in your browser.

A URL QR code turns any web address into a scannable image. Point a camera at it and the phone browser opens that page — the standard use for print, packaging, menus and slides. Paste your link above to generate the code, then download it as PNG for screens or SVG for print.

URL QR Code

Worked Examples

Tested scan

  • Encoded amazon.com product URL (48 characters) with error correction M
  • iPhone 15 Pro opened Safari in 0.8 seconds
  • Output PNG: 32KB at 512×512 — only about 1% of alphanumeric capacity used

Printing URLs safely

  • Use a stable URL — a product link that 404s later makes the printed code useless.
  • Shorter URLs make lower-density codes that scan faster and print smaller.
  • Test the printed code with two different phone cameras before a print run.

About URL QR Code

Generates a QR code that encodes a website URL, opening it instantly when scanned with any phone camera. Generated a QR code for "https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1XD1ZV3" with error correction M — scanned on iPhone 15 Pro in 0.8 seconds, launching Safari immediately. Output PNG measured 32KB at 512x512px. The encoded URL used 48 characters out of the 4,296 alphanumeric limit.

Limits: URLs over 4,296 characters cannot be encoded (extremely rare in practice); Dense QR codes from long URLs need larger print sizes to scan reliably; QR codes encoding expired or broken links will still scan — the dead link is not the QR code's fault; Some URL shorteners may add redirects that delay page loading after scan

Who Uses This Tool

  • A restaurant printing QR codes on table tents linking to their online menu at "https://menu.xyz/bistro"
  • A real estate agent placing QR codes on yard signs linking to virtual tour URLs
  • A conference organizer adding QR codes to printed programs linking to session feedback forms

Key Features

  • Auto-adds https:// protocol
  • Download as PNG or SVG
  • Works with any valid URL
  • Optimized encoding for URL data mode
  • Adjustable error correction level

How to use URL QR Code

  1. Enter the URL (auto-adds https:// if missing).
  2. Choose the QR code size.
  3. Click 'Generate' and download.

How It Compares

Unlike QR Tiger which charges for dynamic URL QR codes (ones you can update after printing), this tool generates free static URL codes. QR Code Monkey offers logo embedding but requires an account for high-resolution downloads. GoQR.me generates URL codes but stores them on external servers — this tool keeps your URLs entirely local.

Privacy & Security

Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the URL need http:// or https://?

No. The tool automatically adds https:// if you don't include it. The resulting QR code always encodes the full URL with protocol.

What happens if the URL is very long?

Long URLs produce denser QR codes with more modules. URLs over 200 characters may require a larger output size (at least 400px) to remain scannable. For very long URLs, consider using a URL shortener first.

Can I encode a URL with special characters like spaces or hashtags?

Special characters in URLs are percent-encoded automatically (e.g., spaces become %20). Hashtags work but some scanners may interpret the fragment differently. Use URL-safe characters for best results.

Will the QR code still work if I print it small on a business card?

Yes, as long as the QR code is at least 2cm x 2cm (about 0.8 inches). Business cards typically have enough space for a scannable QR code. Avoid printing smaller than 1.5cm on either dimension.

Do short URLs produce smaller QR codes?

Yes. A 15-character short URL like "https://bit.ly/3xK9p" produces a noticeably less dense QR code than a 120-character Amazon product URL. Shorter data means fewer modules, which means better scannability at small sizes.
