Encode any plain text — up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters — into a QR code that displays the text when scanned. A 127-character recipe list scanned on an iPhone 15 in 0.6 seconds and came out as a 20KB PNG at 512×512.

Text QR Code

Worked Examples

Tested payload

  • 4-line recipe ingredient list, 127 characters with newlines
  • iPhone 15 camera displayed the text in the preview overlay in 0.6 seconds
  • Output PNG: 20KB at 512×512 — only 3% of the 4,296-character capacity used

Keeping the code scannable

  • Under a few hundred characters the code stays sparse and prints cleanly.
  • Past 2,000 characters the grid gets dense — print it much larger or shorten the text.
  • Emojis and non-Latin scripts work; they consume capacity faster than plain ASCII.

About Text QR Code

Generates a QR code encoding arbitrary plain text, displaying it on-screen when scanned. Generated a QR code encoding a 4-line recipe ingredient list (127 characters including newlines) with error correction M — scanned on iPhone 15, the text displayed in the camera's preview overlay in 0.6 seconds. Output PNG measured 20KB at 512x512px. The text payload used 127 of the 4,296 alphanumeric capacity, producing a low-density, highly scannable code.

Limits: Very long text (2,000+ characters) creates dense QR codes that require large print sizes; Line break formatting may not display consistently across all scanner apps; Emojis and multi-byte characters consume more capacity than ASCII text; Scanning older devices (pre-2018) may require a third-party QR scanner app; Text cannot include clickable hyperlinks — plain text only

Who Uses This Tool

  • A museum placing QR codes next to exhibits that display artist bios and historical context when scanned
  • A landlord including QR codes on rental agreements that show a plain-text summary of key terms
  • A chef printing QR codes on recipe cards that display the full ingredient list on a customer's phone

Key Features

  • Up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters
  • Supports multi-line text and line breaks
  • Handles UTF-8 including emojis and non-Latin scripts
  • Instant generation
  • Download as PNG or SVG

How to use Text QR Code

  1. Enter your text (up to 4,000 characters).
  2. Click 'Generate' and download.

How It Compares

Unlike QR Code Monkey which focuses on URL and vCard QR types, this tool specializes in raw text encoding with full UTF-8 support. QR Tiger offers dynamic text QR codes you can update post-printing but charges per code. GoQR.me supports text but has a 300-character practical limit before density becomes problematic — this tool handles up to 4,296 characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much text can a QR code store?

Up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes of binary data. For mixed-case text with punctuation, the practical limit is around 2,000 characters before the QR code becomes too dense to scan reliably at small sizes.

Does the text display when scanned or does it need an app?

On iOS 15+ and Android 9+, the camera app shows the decoded text directly in a notification or overlay. Older devices may require a third-party QR scanner app that can display plain text.

Can I encode multi-line text with line breaks?

Yes. Line breaks are encoded as newline characters in the QR data. However, some QR scanners display the text as a single line. For guaranteed formatting, use explicit line break characters (\\n) or test with your target scanner.

What happens with special characters like emojis?

Emojis and non-Latin characters (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi) use UTF-8 encoding, which consumes 3-4 bytes per character instead of 1. This reduces the effective capacity. A QR code with 1,000 emojis has less room than one with 1,000 ASCII letters.

Is the text searchable after scanning?

It depends on the scanner app. Some apps let you copy the text to clipboard or search for it. The native iOS/Android camera shows the text but may not offer a copy option — users may need a dedicated QR scanner app for that.
