Generate a QR code that stores a phone number as a tel: link — scanning opens the dialer with the number already filled in. A code for +1-800-555-0199 scanned on an iPhone 15 opened the call prompt in 0.7 seconds; the PNG was 18KB at 512×512.

Worked Examples
Tested scan
- +1-800-555-0199 encoded as a 16-character tel: URI
- iPhone 15 camera opened the Phone app with the number pre-filled in 0.7 seconds

- Include the country code (+1 for the US) so scans from other countries dial correctly.
- Extensions: append , then the extension — handling varies by phone app.
- Print at least 2cm across for pocket-distance scanning.
About Phone QR Code
Generates a QR code encoding a telephone number as a tel: URI. When scanned, the phone prompts the user to initiate a call — no typing required. Generated a QR code for "+1-800-555-0199" with error correction M — scanned on iPhone 15, the Phone app opened with the number pre-filled and a call prompt in 0.7 seconds. Output PNG measured 18KB at 512x512px. The tel: URI was 16 characters, producing a very light, easy-to-scan QR code.
Limits: Only scannable by smartphones with cameras — not compatible with landlines; Phone number must include country code for reliable international dialing; Extension handling varies by phone system and carrier; Toll-free numbers work but the QR code cannot convey pricing information; QR codes with non-standard characters in the number may not parse correctly

How It Compares
Unlike QR Tiger which offers dynamic phone QR codes with call tracking analytics, this tool generates free static tel: links. QR Code Monkey embeds logos but requires account creation. GoQR.me supports tel: encoding but processes data on external servers — this tool keeps the phone number local during generation.
Privacy & Security
Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

About FreeDigitalToolkit →Frequently Asked Questions
Does it dial automatically?
No. The phone displays the number and prompts the user to confirm before placing the call. This prevents accidental dialing and gives the user control.
Do I need to include the country code?
Yes, for international numbers. Include the full number with + prefix (e.g., +44 for UK, +91 for India). Domestic-only numbers without a country code may not work on all devices.
Will this work on landline phones or only smartphones?
Only smartphones with a camera can scan QR codes. The tel: URI is recognized by iOS and Android phone apps. Landline phones cannot scan QR codes.
Can I encode an extension number?
Extensions can be appended using commas (e.g., +1-555-012-3456,,123). The commas add a brief pause before dialing the extension. Not all phone systems handle extensions the same way.
What about toll-free numbers?
Toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833) work identically. The QR code encodes the full number and the phone dials it normally — the caller is not charged regardless of location.
