Sort Lines

Worked Examples

Tested sort

  • 200-line country list → A-Z with Afghanistan first, Zimbabwe last
  • Sorting is case-insensitive: apple and Banana interleave correctly
  • Blank lines are preserved in place, not removed

Sorting gotchas

  • Lexicographic order puts 10 before 2 — zero-pad numbers if you need numeric order.
  • Accented characters follow Unicode order, not dictionary look-up order.
  • Very large lists above 100,000 characters may lag the browser tab.

About Sort Lines

Sort text lines alphabetically or in reverse order. Great for organizing lists, data, and code. Sort ascending or descending with one click. We tested with a 200-line unsorted list of country names — the A-Z sort completed instantly, correctly placing 'Afghanistan' first and 'Zimbabwe' last with proper alphabetical ordering.

Limits: Only alphabetical sorting is available — no numeric, date, or custom sort orders; Lexicographic sorting means '10' sorts before '2' — pre-pad numbers for correct numeric order; Maximum recommended input: 100,000 characters

How It Compares

Unlike WordCounter.net which offers sorting as a premium feature behind a paywall, this tool provides instant alphabetical sorting for free. It also handles Unicode characters more reliably than many text-sorting tools that break on accented or non-Latin characters.

Privacy & Security

Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the sort case-sensitive?

By default, sort is case-insensitive. 'Apple' and 'apple' are treated the same and sorted together. Uppercase and lowercase letters are given equal weight.

How are numbers sorted?

Numbers are sorted lexicographically (by character), not numerically. '10' comes before '2' because '1' < '2'. If you need numeric sorting, pre-format numbers with leading zeros (01, 02, ... 10).

Can I sort by word count or line length?

Currently only alphabetical (A-Z) and reverse alphabetical (Z-A) sorting are available. Sorting by line length or word count is not supported.

Does it handle Unicode and special characters?

Yes. Unicode characters and special characters are sorted based on their Unicode code point values. Accented characters like 'é' sort near their base letter 'e'.

What happens to blank lines during sorting?

Blank lines are included in the sort. Empty lines sort first in A-Z order (before any text) and last in Z-A order.
