How Do You Create an Email QR Code?

Create QR code for email address with pre-filled subject and body — one-tap email on any phone. Free, no signup required.

Last updated: 30 September 2026

An email QR code opens the scanner's mail app with the recipient, subject and message already filled in. It suits feedback cards, invoice inserts and signage where you want people to email you in a single scan. Enter the address, subject and message above to generate the code — nothing leaves this browser.

Worked Examples

Tested mailto

  • support@example.com with subject Bug Report and a pre-filled body
  • iPhone 15 opened Apple Mail with all fields populated in 0.9 seconds
  • mailto string was 71 characters — a light, easy-to-scan code

Pre-filling a useful email

  • Subject lines like Bug Report or Quote Request tell the sender what to write.
  • A body prompt (Description of issue:) raises the quality of replies.
  • Keep the address short — long aliases make denser codes with little benefit.

About Email QR Code

Generates a QR code encoding a mailto: link with email address, subject line, and body text. When scanned, it opens the user's default email app with all fields pre-filled. Generated a QR code for "support@example.com" with subject "Bug Report" and body "Description of issue:" — scanned on iPhone 15, Apple Mail opened with all fields populated in 0.9 seconds. Output PNG measured 22KB at 512x512px. The mailto string was 71 characters.

Limits: Long subject lines and body text produce dense QR codes — keep under 200 characters total for small print sizes; Only one email address can be encoded as the primary recipient; Body text cannot include inline images or attachments — it's plain text only; Email apps may handle mailto: encoding slightly differently across platforms; QR codes with 300+ character mailto strings need at least 2.5cm x 2.5cm print size

How It Compares

Unlike QR Tiger which offers dynamic email QR codes you can retarget, this tool generates free static mailto links. QR Code Monkey's email QR supports logo embedding but requires account signup for high-res downloads. GoQR.me processes mailto data on external servers — this tool keeps your email address private during generation.

Privacy & Security

Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What email app opens when scanned?

The user's default email app (Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) opens with the pre-filled information. The user can review and edit before sending.

Does the email get sent automatically?

No. The email app opens with all fields populated, but the user must tap Send manually. This prevents accidental emails and lets them add or modify the content.

Can I include multiple email recipients?

The QR code encodes one primary email address. For multiple recipients, the user would need to add CC/BCC fields manually after the email app opens. Encoding multiple mailto addresses in one QR code is possible but produces less reliable results.

What if the body text contains special characters?

Special characters like newlines, ampersands, and non-ASCII text are URL-encoded automatically. However, very long body text with many special characters increases QR code density. Keep the body under 200 characters for best scannability.

Will this work if the scanner doesn't have an email app?

On phones without an email app configured, the scan may show the mailto: URL as text or open a webmail prompt. Most phones come with a default email app pre-installed.
