How to Calculate US Sales Tax in Any State

Sales tax is one of the most confusing costs for US shoppers. Every state sets its own rate, and many states allow cities and counties to add their own tax on top. A $100 purchase can cost anywhere from $100 to $110 depending on where you shop.

US State Sales Tax Rates: The five states with the highest combined state and local rates are Louisiana (9.55%), Tennessee (9.55%), Arkansas (9.51%), Washington state (9.40%), and Alabama (9.29%). The five states with the lowest rates are Hawaii (4.44%), Wyoming (5.33%), Wisconsin (5.43%), Maine (5.50%), and Virginia (5.75%).

States with No Sales Tax: Five US states have no statewide sales tax — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local jurisdictions to charge sales tax, so some areas in Alaska do collect tax.

How to Calculate: Multiply the purchase price by the tax rate. Example: $200 jacket in California (7.25% state rate). Tax = $200 × 0.0725 = $14.50. Total = $214.50. For a $50 meal in Texas (6.25% state rate): Tax = $50 × 0.0625 = $3.13. Total = $53.13.

What I Tested: I used the US Sales Tax Calculator with several states.

• $100 in California (7.25%) → Tax: $7.25, Total: $107.25. Correct.

• $250 in Texas (6.25%) → Tax: $15.63, Total: $265.63. Correct.

• $1,000 in New York (4%) → Tax: $40.00, Total: $1,040.00. Correct.

• $50 in Oregon (0%) → Tax: $0.00, Total: $50.00. Correct — no sales tax state.

• Custom rate 8.75% (CA state + LA city) on $300 → Tax: $26.25, Total: $326.25. Correct.

Step-by-Step: (1) Open the US Sales Tax Calculator. (2) Enter the purchase price. (3) Select your state from the dropdown. (4) Optionally enter a custom rate to include local county/city tax. (5) Click 'Calculate Tax' to see the tax amount and total.

One Limitation: This calculator uses state-level tax rates only. Many states have additional local (city/county) taxes that are not included in the state rate. Use the custom rate field to enter the combined rate for your specific location.

Common Mistake: Forgetting that some items are tax-exempt. Groceries, prescription medicine, and clothing are exempt or taxed at lower rates in several states. Always check your state's specific rules for the item category.
