How to Calculate the Exact Number of Days Between Two Dates

How many days until your contract expires? How old are you in exact days? How many days between two project milestones? These calculations seem simple until you try to account for leap years, different month lengths, and crossing year boundaries. A date difference calculator does it instantly.
Common Uses: Calculating exact age in days for legal or medical purposes. Counting days until a deadline, release date, or event. Measuring project duration between start and end dates. Determining interest accrual periods for financial calculations. Checking warranty expiration dates.
The Leap Year Problem: A leap year occurs every 4 years (except century years not divisible by 400). February has 29 days in leap years, 28 in normal years. The year 2000 was a leap year. 1900 was not. 2100 will not be. Manual calculation is error-prone.
What I Tested: I used the [Date Difference](/calculator-tools/date-difference) tool with several date pairs.
• January 1, 2026 to September 9, 2026 → 251 days. Correct (verified with a calendar).
• February 28, 2024 to March 1, 2024 → 2 days. Correct (2024 is a leap year, so Feb 28 → Feb 29 → Mar 1 = 2 days).
• December 31, 2025 to January 1, 2026 → 1 day. Correct.
• March 1, 2025 to March 1, 2026 → 365 days. Correct (2026 is not a leap year).
The tool also shows the result in weeks and months for convenience.
Step-by-Step: (1) Open the [Date Difference](/calculator-tools/date-difference). (2) Select the start date using the date picker. (3) Select the end date. (4) Click 'Calculate'. (5) Read the difference in days, weeks, and months.
One Limitation: The tool calculates the difference between two specific dates. It does not calculate recurring intervals (e.g., 'every 3 months') or business days (excluding weekends and holidays). For business day calculations, you would need a specialized tool.
Common Mistake: Counting the start date and end date both. The difference between March 1 and March 3 is 2 days, not 3. The tool correctly calculates the exclusive difference (not counting both endpoints).
Privacy: All calculations happen in your browser. No data is sent to any server.
Next Step: If you need to calculate someone's exact age in years, months, and days, use the [Age Calculator](/calculator-tools/age-calculator) instead.
