How to Calculate the Right Tip Amount at Restaurants

Tipping Etiquette by Country: United States: 15-20% is standard. 18% is a good default. Below 15% suggests dissatisfaction. United Kingdom: 10-15% is common. How to Calculate: Standard method: Bill × 1.15 for 15%, × 1.18 for 18%, × 1.20 for 20%. Quick mental math: 10% is easy (move decimal one place). Then add half of that for 15%, or double it for 20%. Example: $67 bill. 10% = $6.70. 15% = $6.70 + $3.35 = $10.05. 20% = $6.70 × 2 = $13.40.

One Limitation: The calculator uses standard percentage math. It does not account for automatic gratuity (some restaurants add 18-20% for large groups) or service charges included in the bill. Check your receipt before adding extra tip.
Common Mistake: Calculating tip on the tax-included total. In most US states, tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount. If your $67 bill includes $5 tax, tip on $62, not $67. This saves you a small amount and is the standard practice.
