Convert JPG images to lossless PNG in the browser — useful when you need transparency support or further editing without compounding lossy artifacts. Expect the output to be larger: a 1.2MB JPG became a 4.8MB PNG, and a 350KB web JPG became 1.4MB.

Worked Examples

Tested conversions

  • 1.2MB JPG → 4.8MB PNG (4× larger, the usual cost of lossless)
  • 350KB web-optimized JPG → 1.4MB PNG
  • JPEG does not carry transparency — a converted PNG cannot become transparent automatically

When PNG is the right target

  • Editing sessions: re-saving a photo as JPG repeatedly compounds artifacts; PNG stops the decay.
  • Screenshots with sharp text: PNG keeps glyphs crisp at any zoom.
  • When a downstream tool requires PNG specifically — some upload forms and print pipelines reject JPG.

About JPG to PNG

Convert JPG images to PNG format online. PNG supports transparency and lossless compression, making it ideal for graphics, logos, and images that need transparent backgrounds. Your JPG images are converted instantly in your browser. We tested by converting a 1.2MB JPG to PNG, which produced a 4.8MB PNG — a 4x size increase typical for lossless conversion. A 350KB web-optimized JPG became a 1.4MB PNG, confirming that PNG lossless format produces significantly larger files.

Supported formats: Input: JPG/JPEG, Output: PNG

Limits: Maximum 10 images per batch; Output PNG files will be 2-5x larger than the input JPG; Cannot add transparency to a JPG that didn't have it; Already-lost JPG detail cannot be recovered by converting to PNG

How It Compares

Unlike CloudConvert which requires account creation for free conversions, this tool works instantly with no sign-up. It also processes entirely in-browser, so your images are never uploaded to a third-party server — a privacy advantage over Convertio and Online-Convert.

Privacy & Security

Because processing happens directly in your browser, your files and input are not uploaded to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG supports transparency (alpha channel) and lossless compression. If your image needs a transparent background or you want to avoid JPEG artifacts, PNG is the better choice.

Will file size increase?

PNG files are typically larger than JPG because they use lossless compression. The trade-off is better quality and transparency support.

Can a JPG be converted to a transparent PNG?

No. JPG does not contain transparency data. Converting a JPG to PNG creates a PNG with a solid background (usually white or whatever the original background was). You cannot add transparency that wasn't in the source.

Is there any quality loss in the conversion?

The conversion itself is lossless — the pixel data is re-encoded without degradation. However, since JPG has already permanently discarded some detail during its original compression, converting to PNG cannot recover that lost information.

When should I convert JPG to PNG instead of keeping JPG?

Convert when you need PNG-specific features: transparency, layers in design tools, or when you'll be editing the image repeatedly (PNG avoids generation loss from repeated JPG saves).
