How Many Working Days Are in a Year? (2026 Answer: 261 or 252)

October 15, 2026

Written by Mohammad Sohail

The short answer is 261. A calendar year has 52 complete weeks (260 weekdays) plus one or two extra weekdays depending on which day the year starts and ends. Remove the US federal holidays that fall Monday to Friday and 2026 drops to 252. This guide shows the monthly breakdown, how many working days are left from any date, and how to count business days between two dates without a spreadsheet.

How Many Working Days Are in a Year?

Working days are Monday through Friday. Fifty-two weeks times five weekdays is 260. A common year has 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day, so the extra day either adds a weekday or lands on a weekend. 2026 starts on a Thursday and ends on a Thursday — both weekdays — which is why the full year holds **261 working days** with weekends only.

A leap year (366 days) adds one more calendar day. Whether that day counts depends on the weekday, not on the leap status itself. The rule stays the same: count the Mondays-to-Fridays, then subtract holidays.

How Many Working Days Are in 2026?

From 1 January to 31 December 2026:

• Weekdays only: **261 working days**

• Weekdays minus the nine US federal holidays that fall on a weekday: **252 working days**

Independence Day, 4 July 2026, is a Saturday. Federal employees observe it on Friday 3 July, but a private employer that only closes on the Saturday itself loses nothing from the weekday count. The calculator lets you exclude whichever observed date your organization actually closes on.

How Many Working Days Are Left in 2026?

From Thursday 15 October 2026 to Thursday 31 December 2026:

• Calendar days: 78

• Working days, weekends only: **56**

• Working days minus Veterans Day (11 Nov), Thanksgiving (26 Nov) and Christmas (25 Dec): **53**

Q4 as a whole — 1 October to 31 December — holds 66 working days with weekends only, 64 once the three remaining federal holidays are removed. If you are planning a launch, a hire or a contract that has to finish before year-end, those are the numbers the calendar actually gives you.

Business Days in a Year Minus Holidays

The ten US federal holidays are New Year's Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2026 nine of them fall on a weekday:

• 1 January — New Year's Day (Thursday)

• 19 January — MLK Jr. Day (Monday)

• 16 February — Presidents' Day (Monday)

• 25 May — Memorial Day (Monday)

• 7 September — Labor Day (Monday)

• 12 October — Columbus Day (Monday)

• 11 November — Veterans Day (Wednesday)

• 26 November — Thanksgiving (Thursday)

• 25 December — Christmas (Friday)

261 − 9 = **252 working days** for 2026 when every one of those is switched off. Banks, schools and many offices close on additional days — day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve — that are not federal holidays. Each one you close is one more weekday off the count.

Business Days and Calendar Days Difference

A 30-day payment term is not 30 working days. Start a net-30 invoice on Friday 2 October 2026 and it is due Monday 2 November — 31 calendar days later. Between those dates sit roughly 21 business days, not 30. Contracts that say net 30 almost always mean calendar days; invoices that say due within 20 business days mean weekdays only.

The same trap appears in project plans. A two-week sprint is 14 calendar days but only 10 working days. A 90-day probation period from 1 October 2026 runs to 30 December — 64 working days with weekends only, 61 after Thanksgiving and Christmas. Use the calculator rather than multiplying weeks by five when a holiday falls inside the range.

How Many Working Days by Month in 2026

Weekday counts before holiday exclusions:

• January 2026: 22 weekdays (New Year's Day 1 Jan, MLK Day 19 Jan → 20 with holidays)

• February 2026: 20 weekdays (Presidents' Day 16 Feb → 19 with holidays)

• March 2026: 22 weekdays (no federal holiday on a weekday → 22)

• April 2026: 22 weekdays (no federal holiday on a weekday → 22)

• May 2026: 21 weekdays (Memorial Day 25 May → 20 with holidays)

• June 2026: 22 weekdays (no federal holiday on a weekday → 22)

• July 2026: 23 weekdays (Independence Day is Saturday 4 Jul → still 23)

• August 2026: 21 weekdays (no federal holiday on a weekday → 21)

• September 2026: 22 weekdays (Labor Day 7 Sep → 21 with holidays)

• October 2026: 22 weekdays (Columbus Day 12 Oct → 21 with holidays)

• November 2026: 21 weekdays (Veterans Day 11 Nov, Thanksgiving 26 Nov → 19 with holidays)

• December 2026: 23 weekdays (Christmas 25 Dec → 22 with holidays)

Sum of the monthly weekday counts: 22+20+22+22+21+22+23+21+22+22+21+23 = **261**. Sum after subtracting the nine weekday holidays: **252**.

What Are Working Days? Business Days Are Monday Through Friday

Working days (business days, workdays — the terms are interchangeable in US contracts) are the Monday-to-Friday dates in a range. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. Public holidays are excluded only when the contract, company policy or statute says so. Business days in a shipping context sometimes means days the carrier operates, which can differ from federal holidays — carriers move packages on some holidays and not on others.

The practical definition that matches almost every office schedule: if the banks are closed and the mail does not arrive, it is not a business day.

Working Days Calculator USA

The Working Days Calculator on this site counts the weekdays between any two dates and lets you switch off any subset of the ten US federal holidays. Enter a start date and an end date; the breakdown shows total days, working days and weekend/holiday days. Everything runs in your browser — no signup, no upload, no server.

A few tested checks from that tool:

• 1 Jan – 31 Dec 2026, weekends only → 261 working days

• 1 Jan – 31 Dec 2026, all US federal holidays on → 252 working days

• 1 Jul – 30 Sep 2026 → 66 working days (65 with US holidays on)

• 30 Oct – 12 Nov 2026 → 14 calendar days, 10 working days — a classic 10-day PTO request that only costs two weeks of PTO

How to Calculate Working Days Between Two Dates

Three steps by hand:

1. Count the calendar days in the inclusive range (end − start + 1).

2. Subtract the weekend days: 2 per complete week, plus any leftover Sat/Sun in the partial weeks.

3. Subtract the public holidays that fall Monday to Friday inside the range.

Example: 1 July to 30 September 2026 is 92 calendar days. Ninety-two divided by 7 is 13 weeks plus one day, so 13×5 + 1 = 66 weekdays. Independence Day is a Saturday, Labor Day (7 Sep) is the only federal holiday on a weekday inside the range, so 66 − 1 = 65 with holidays on. The calculator returns the same numbers.

Limitations

The calculator assumes a Saturday/Sunday weekend and a US federal holiday list. State holidays, company closures, half-days and Sunday-to-Thursday schedules are not modelled — disable the holiday toggle and subtract those yourself. Holiday dates are fixed to 2026; when a presidential proclamation moves an observed date, the tool does not auto-update.

How It Compares

timeanddate.com and calculator.net both offer working-days calculators. They load server-side and show ads, and the free tiers often skip holiday exclusion. The Working Days Calculator here runs entirely client-side, includes the ten federal holidays as individual toggles, and shows the full total/working/weekend breakdown without an account.

Privacy

Dates you enter are processed in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged. Close the tab and the numbers are gone.

Next Step

Open the Working Days Calculator, pick your start and end dates, switch on the holidays your organization actually closes for, and read the working-days count. Counting the plain gap between two dates without the weekday filter? Use the Date Difference Calculator instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many working days are in a year?

261 weekdays in a normal year — 52 weeks × 5 days, plus one extra weekday when the year starts or ends on a weekday. Excluding the US federal holidays that land on weekdays leaves 252 in 2026.

How many working days are in 2026?

261 from 1 January to 31 December 2026 with weekends only. Switch on the nine US federal holidays that fall on weekdays and the count drops to 252. Independence Day (4 July 2026) is a Saturday, so it removes nothing.

How many working days are left in 2026 from mid-October?

From Thursday 15 October to Thursday 31 December 2026 there are 56 working days with weekends only, or 53 once Veterans Day (11 Nov), Thanksgiving (26 Nov) and Christmas (25 Dec) are excluded. That is 78 calendar days.

What is the difference between business days and calendar days?

Calendar days count every date including weekends. Business days (working days) count only Monday to Friday, and optionally drop public holidays. A 30-day payment term that starts on a Friday spans 30 calendar days but only about 20 to 22 business days.

How do I calculate working days between two dates by hand?

Count the calendar days in the range, divide by 7 for whole weeks (each week holds 5 weekdays), then add the leftover weekdays, then subtract any public holidays that fall Monday to Friday inside the range. The calculator above does all of that for you.

Are working days always Monday to Friday?

In the United States, yes for federal and most office schedules. Some countries and industries run Sunday to Thursday, and some factories work six days. The calculator's weekend exclusion assumes Saturday and Sunday.

Do US federal holidays reduce the working day count?

Only the ones that fall on a weekday. In 2026 nine of the ten federal holidays land Monday to Friday, so the count drops from 261 to 252. When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday it is observed on a weekday by federal agencies — the calculator lets you pick which dates to exclude.

How many working days per month in 2026?

January 22, February 20, March 22, April 22, May 21, June 22, July 23, August 21, September 22, October 22, November 21, December 23 — weekdays before holiday exclusions. Full worked figures are in the monthly table below.
